Qualcomm, Apple, TI, Samsung, Nvidia : Top 5 mobile devices graphics chip vendors in
Chip major Qualcomm has shipped the most mobile devices GPUs last year, according to Jon Peddie Research. Apple, Texas Instruments, Samsung, and Nvidia are the other top players.
Other suppliers in the market include Broadcom, Freescale, Intel, Marvell, MediaTek, Rockchip, St-Erickson, and Wonder Media. Jon Peddie Research said that shipments during the fourth quarter of 2011 of GPUs in mobile devices (tablets and smart phones) had a CAGR for the year (Q1 to Q4) of 18 percent. Samsung's sales surged in Q3 and Q4 giving them the highest CAGR for the year (39 percent), Followed by Apple (26 percent), and Qualcomm (16.5 percent) which was already enjoying high shipment rates. In terms of shipments Qualcomm led the pact and ended up with 31 percent market share for the year, followed by Apple (23 percent) and TI (17 percent). Market Share Q1'11 Q2'11 Q3'11 Q4'11 2011 Qualcomm 31.6 percent 32.6 percent 31.6 percent 30.2 percent 31.4 percent Apple 22.2 percent 21.4 percent 18.7 percent 27.1 percent 22.7 percent TI 20.6 percent 16.2 percent 15.9 percent 16.2 percent 17.0 percent Samsung 9.2 percent 13.9 percent 15.9 percent 14.9 percent 13.8 percent Nvidia 2.8 percent 3.6 percent 4.1 percent 1.7 percent 3.0 percent Others 13.4 percent 12.2 percent 13.8 percent 9.9 percent 12.1 percent Table 1: Relative market share for mobile device GPU suppliers Mobile devices GPUs are as powerful or more so as entry-level PC GPUs and run applications that use Open GL ES 1.1 to 2.0. They have programmable shaders and can deliver amazing game play, UI and browser acceleration, and accelerate the new potentially killer app augmented-reality (AR). In addition to the semiconductor suppliers there are four GPU IP suppliers: ARM, DMP, Imagination Technologies, and Vivante. Those companies provide IP to all of the SoC builders except Broadcom, Nvidia, and Qualcomm. 2012 is shaping up to be a battle royal, with Samsung making big gains, Apple continuing its relentless growth, TI fighting back and Nvidia gaining design wins. http://telecomlead.com/inner-page-detail...block=News |
