After several months of lethargy
under the Congress government, the
I&B ministry has accelerated issue
of TV channel downlink licenses.
More than 200 licenses were
pending when the Modi government
took control.
The number of TV channel licenses
issued has spurted to 821 by end
November, from 798 in July 2014,
following streamlining of clearance
procedures by the Information and
Broadcasting Ministry.
The 821 TV licenses are broadly
divided into 404 News & Current
Affairs channels and 417 General
Entertainment Channels (GEC).
These consist of:
[BLACK CLUB SUIT] 693 For Uplink & Downlink from
India. Includes 382 News Channels
[BLACK CLUB SUIT] 93 uplinked from overseas &
downlinked into India Includes 16
news channels
[BLACK CLUB SUIT] 35 uplinked from India for foreign
downlink only Includes 6 news
channels
NEW GEC CHANNELS
Some of the new entrants since July,
include GECs: Epic TV, Bengali
Orange TV, Luck TV, Sairam TV;
Bhojpuri Cinema TV, Meenakshi TV in
Tamil; Blue TV in Hindi, English,
Punjabi and regional languages.
NEW NEWS CHANNELS
Recent News TV channels include
Janam TV, INE Live, and Kalinga TV in
scheduled languages.
Times Television Network (TTN) has
received licenses for 3 news
channels: Times Now 2, Times Now 3
and ET Now 2.
The largest number of new TV
licenses have been issued to Star
Network with Star Cricket Asia, Star
Sports Highlights, Star Sports HD3,
Star Sports HD4, Star Sports HD2,
Star Sports HD1, Star Sports 3, Star
Sports 4, Star Sports 2 and Star
Sports 1. These channels have been
allowed to operate 'in all permitted
languages under the Constitution.'
The year 2014 has thus seen the
clearance to more than 25 channels,
including those issued under
congress rule.

10 sports channels from star India, huh and still they are thinking of providing more in regional languages.
