Bro channels don't have to pay DTH. DTH buys channels. It's just like movie distribution. Producer don't pay distributor to distribute his movies. Distributor buys movies from producer.

Not at all.
All DTHs take Carriage Fee from the Broadcasters.

Is it true bro? Is it for all channels or only newly started channels? For big channels like zee, sony, and star, it doesn't make sense to me that they have to pay the DTH. They are high demand channels. DTH will pay huge amount to the broadcasters to get license to carry these channels.

Yes, in starting days DTH companies were charging carriage fee from small broadcasters but as the total number of channels increased they started charging all of them.

DTH companies have a limited number of transponders and can carry a limited number of channels only, hence they charge carriage fee from the broadcasters, those who pay it will remain on platform while those who don't will be removed so that the DPO will get space for another channel which agrees to pay that fee.

Broadcasters may've to shell out carriage fee

Last paragraph of the article is exactly my thoughts too :)

Also got this info:

(iii) No carriage fee is to be paid by a broadcaster if the subscription of the channel is more than or equal to 20 per cent of the subscriber base.

(iv) The rate of carriage fee has been capped at 20 paisa per channel per subscriber per month. Further, the carriage fee amount will decrease with increase in subscription.

TRAI on carriage fee, other issues in draft interconnect guidelines
