About 3.74 lakh documents pertaining to the secretariat of the erstwhile Hyderabad state and the Government Orders (GOs) of Andhra Pradesh have been digitised under a project of the state archives and research institute.

From the commencement of the project on February 1 till March 31 this year, at a budget of one quarter of Rs 50 lakh, a total number of 3,73,134 documents of former State of Hyderabad from 1846 onwards and that of AP GOs from 1920 havebeen scanned/microfilmed and digitised, Zareena Parveen, Director of the State Archives said.

"They will be uploaded into the server proposed for this project and the digitisation of the entire work will be programmed into software with an aim to create digital library and web-enabled service," Parveen said.

The reference media and the scanned image of the original document of the rare records would be made available online in the near future, she said, adding movable compactor systems, on par with the National Archive of UK, will replace the age-old system of open racks for the storage and preservation of the old records.

Work towards the completion of the task has already begun, she said. Lauding APSARI for successfully completing the project, Ajay Mishra, Principal Secretary, Higher Education Department, said more funds would be made available as and when necessary.

Underlining the significance of the digitisation of the archival record, he said the digitised record should be accessible to one and all in the wake of RTI Act coming into force.

Prof Suleman Siddiqui, former Vice Chancellor of Osmania University, said several great western historians and authors are eagerly waiting for the digitisation of the old

archival record which will make it easier for them to research on the historical documents. A CD containing the pilot project of digitisation work has been released.
