Tamilnadu Arasu Cable Corporation will commence its operations formally from 2 September and consumers will be provided with 90 channels at a cost Rs 70 per month, Tamilnadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa today said.

Making a statement under Rule 110 in the State Assembly, the Chief Minister said, 'Arasu Cable Corporation will ensure that people in the State get cable TV connections at a cheaper rate'.

.
'Everyone knows that a monopoly prevails in the cable TV business in the State and people are charged exorbitant rates. Those who are in the business are now making huge profits', she said.

The Arasu Cable Corporation was formed in 2007 and in the next year by July, they started their operations. They provided over 50,000 connections then. However due to the selfish motives of the previous DMK regime, the number of connections went down considerably. On 31 March, 2011, only 432 connections were being given, she added.

She stated that it was poll promise of the AIADMK to end the monopoly of a few in the cable TV business and ensure equal opportunities for all. Also we prommised to give cable TV connections at cheaper prices through the government'.

'In a bid to fulfill our promise, Arasu Cable Corporation was revived. A full-time chairman and an IAS officer as managing director were appointed', Jayalalithaa said.

'Maintenance works were taken up at digital control rooms in Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Tirunelveli and Vellore. Also private control rooms were taken on rent in the remaining 27 districts and new analog control rooms were established'.

Following a call to associate themselves with the Arasu Cable TV Corporation's operations, a total of 34,344 cable operators (except Chennai) joined enthusiastically. Collectively, they have 1.45 crore cable connections. Efforts are being taken to maintain telecast centres in 31 disticts and provide good service all-round-the-clock, she added.

Efforts are on to provide a total of 90 channels including pay channels Initially free-to-air channels would be given and soon the paid ones would be added to the service, the Chief Minister said.

Of the Rs 70 to be charged from each consumer, the government share would be just Rs 20, she said.

VELLORE: With Arasu Cable all set to be launched on Friday, operators are both upbeat and crestfallen. While they are relieved that the new government-owned multi-system operator (MSO) will break the domination of private operators in the cable TV market, they are wondering what to tell customers as some popular pay channels will not be part of the bouquet.
Accordingly, around 20 channels under the Sun group, 25 in the Star group, which include Tamil channel Star Vijay, UTV, ESPN and Ten Sports and other pay channels will not be on offer from September 2.
When contacted, the Tamizhaga Arasu Cable TV Operators’ General Welfare Association’s state treasurer, Dhamodharan, said convincing customers in the light of the absence of popular pay channels was difficult.
“We were informed that these channels would be broadcast soon. However, a timeframe for this has not been given,” he said and added that these popular channels earn more than 10 times from TRP ratings and advertisements than through subscriptions.
The Corporation has been ordered to collect only Rs 70 from customers. As a first step, of the 90 free channels, 65 will be aired from the first day itself. “But, there is no communication on the broadcast of pay channels and we are clueless about the cable charge in this regard,” Dhamodharan explained.
The operators were also not satisfied with the amount that has been fixed. Pointing out that the Corporation would take away Rs 20, they felt that it was impossible for any operator to meet his employees’ salary, repair of equipment, electricity bill, office rent and related expenses with a balance of Rs 50 per customer.
“We want to charge every customer Rs 100 along with providing some important pay channels. With this, we can give Rs 25 to the government and take Rs 75,” Dhamodharan suggested.
He said almost 50 per cent of customers would be covered at the start of the launch and around 80 per cent by the next month.
Arasu Cable will operate in all districts except Chennai, which is expected to get the licence for conditional access system.
