James Cameron promises four Avatar sequels

James Cameron announced at CinemaCon 2016 today that there will be four Avatar sequels, with the first hitting theaters in 2018.

Avatar 2 was pushed back earlier this year to avoid opening the same weekend as Star Wars Episode VIII, and now it looks like that movie will be the first of many to come within James Cameron's universe.

According to Variety, the next three films will premiere in 2020, 2022 and 2023. Cameron said the sequels would be filmed concurrently and each will be a standalone film, which combined will create a complete saga.

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly last December, Cameron said he felt pressured with his sequel, saying he wants to make sure the first Avatar "wasn't just some big fluke."

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter , Avatar star Sigourney Weaver revealed production is starting soon and the cast will start training soon for the film.

“We’re starting training, and we’re starting — hm, I probably can’t say anything," Weaver said. "We will be actually shooting it by the fall.”

James Cameron’s long-awaited and oft-delayed follow-up to “Avatar” has been pushed back another year. “Avatar 2” will hit theaters on Dec. 17, 2021 instead of Dec. 18, 2020 as originally planned. Its move means that “Avatar 3” will open on Dec. 22, 2023 as opposed to Dec. 17, 2021 while “Avatar 4” will bow on Dec. 19, 2025 instead of Dec. 20, 2024 and “Avatar 5” will launch Dec. 17, 2027.
