MUMBAI: The television industry in India has changed a lot in the last few years and now the pace of change is going to be greater.
However, there are far bigger challenges ahead of the industry.
Star India CEO Uday Shankar believes that people forget that the entire history of television in this country is just 20–22 years
old. And this industry has grown tremendously and has done some remarkable work on the creative as well as business side. In his view, the biggest change that has happened is that when one talks about television, it is the most
critiqued, criticised and malafied medium.
“It still is a very young industry and we have proceeded towards growth that the developed
western countries took 6–7 decades to reach.
The biggest challenge is when you have grown at that rapid cliff, where you go from here.
And that to my mind is the single biggest challenge that this industry is faced with,” Shankar said while addressing a session on
‘Redefining television’ at TV.Nxt 2014,organised by trade website afaqs! Shankar said that nobody has clarity on what’s happening internally to the companies and
every media company has to reinvent itself, whether it is Zee or Star, or smaller regional players.
