Discussion Can a delayed broadcast of IPL on Star Sports First ruin Jio's free stream strategy for IPL?

Is Star Sports airing a delayed IPL for free a good move?

  • Yes, it will increase reach among viewers.

  • No, bad for ad revenue for pay Star Sports channels.

As we know this year's IPL will be totally streamed for free on JioCinema which is kind of a good thing as the reach of IPL will expand to millions of more people. But there is a catch streaming same will require data and lots of data. Although the aim is too not only bring new technology to IPL like VR and 4K. Aim is also to reach lowest section of viewers. Recent price hike in NTO 3.0 might even affect pay viewers. But I personally think they won't be much of an affect as people are use to inflation. Coming to point Jio has decided to bring 4K for premium audience, VR just a gimmick imo and totally free stream giving young viewers another reason to cut the cord. One thing that is hard to understand is catering lower income section of people. Yes, you get data cable to stream content like a psp on a CRT. But the thing is psp is offline and this requires Internet. A lot of internet to stream a match. Unlike other countries we have net neutrality here. You cannot stream content without using your alloted data. Giving too much data away by Jio will affect Jio's ARPU. We can't expect everyone to be on 5G or buy a broadband connection.

Enter Star Sports here. The broadcaster who also had the streaming rights until last season. They have had experience of DD FreeDish. Although they removed the channel. They can be back in no time. Now imagine them giving away IPL on DD FreeDish. But with a delayed an hour feed. This will not only help them aggressively compete against Jio. They will also earn from both pay tv subscription and ads. Here they get also get ad revenue directly from FTA TV.

BQ: Should Star Sports 1 and Star Sports 1 HD be discounted during IPL to compete with JioCinema?

There should be telecast of select IPL matches on Star Sports First and it should be made a DD Free Dish "Exclusive Channel". Will be a good decision for all stakeholders
What would stakeholders prefer live or a delayed feed on a DD FreeDish exclusive channel?

Streaming will be blocked or become slow because the rush will be 20-30 bigger than FIFA Wc.Lets see how jio handle it. and the rush will be high and streaming buffers people switch to star

What kind of a question is this buddy? Broadcaster will get to reach out to DD Free Dish viewers by airing select IPL matches on Star Sports First if is made available exclusively on this platform. It will also help compete with Jio / Viacom18 strategy of reaching out to this segment of viewers.

Thus not only Star Sports stands to gain on Pay TV Platform front but even gain an edge in FTA platform space

Air live or one hour delayed match?

I know around 2017 DD sports aired a 1 hour delayed live feed of ipl for DDFD and they called it D/LIVE. So, I know that delayed feed of ipl is very frustrating. So I don't think anyone watches a delayed match on ssfirst and any channel, why won't he watch live on jio cinema.
But if they live some matche like opener, playoffs and some best matches like CSKvMi etc on DDfd by channels like star utsav movies etc., that boost their ipl revenue. They also lived some match of pkl on star utsav movies for DDFD consumers.
