Censor trouble stalls ‘Udta Punjab’ release

The film, based on the subject of drug abuse in Punjab, has failed to receive a clearance from the censor board because of ‘excessive swearing’ in the movie, according to media reports

Hours after the release of a new song on Thursday, Shahid Kapoor and Alia Bhatt-starrer Udta Punjab was back in the news- this time for trouble with the censors, media reports said.

The film, based on the subject of drug abuse in Punjab, has failed to receive a clearance from the censor board because of “excessive swearing” in the movie, according to NDTV news channel and The Times of India website.

The examining committee refused to clear the movie also on account of scenes showing drug consumption, the reports sauid.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap, one of the producers, has decided to directly approach the ministry of information and broadcasting for a resolution, abandoning the usual route of going to the Revising Committee or Tribunal, they said.

Kashyap has argued that the expletive-laden content is integral to the plot of the movie.

The film, directed by Abhishek Chaubey of Ishqiya fame, has been co-produced by Balaji Motion Pictures and Phantom Films. Besides Kapoor and Bhatt, it stars Kareena Kapoor Khan and Punjabi actor Diljit Dosanjh and is slated to release on 17 June.

Representatives of the Udta Punjab production team were unavailable for comment.

'Censor wants producers to turn off Udta Punjab's location': Twitter rips apart the Censor Board :angry :angry :angry

Other than the title, the Censor Board has asked for every mention of Punjab to be removed from the movie.

The Shahid Kapoor starrer, Udta Punjab, has run into a fresh bout of trouble with the Central Board of Film Certification. As Scroll has reported, the producers of Bollywood film are likely to move court against the Revising Committee of Central Board of Film Certification ruling that has allegedly asked them to remove all references to Punjab from the film, except for in the title.

The ruling Shiromani Akali Dal has objected to the film's depiction the state's drug problem.
Last month, the CBFC had refused to give its approval to the film. This forced director Abhishek Chaubey and producers Phantom Films and Balaji Telefilms to approach the second level appeal, the Examining Committee. This committee has allegedly demanded close to 89 cuts of expletives and anything that links the movie to Punjab. None of this is in writing, which is why the filmmakers are likely to approach the Bombay High Court.

With the Punjab assembly elections less than nine months away, the release of the movie could spell into political trouble for the state's ruling party, the Shrimoni Akali Dal which is a partner with the ruling-National Democratic Alliance at the centre.

Jumping into the fray, director Ram Gopal Varma tweeted, "For what it actually represents Udta Punjab Is diminutive.. A more truthful and righteous title would be Udta India or Udta World."

Also starring Kareena Kapoor Khan, Alia Bhatt and Diljit Dosanjh, Udta Punjab is expected to release on June 17.
Twitter users did not take kindly to the news.
