Earlier this week, Prasar Bharati CEO Jawhar Sircar boldly announced that Doordarshan got 20 times more viewership than Star Cricket for the India matches during the ICC Champions Trophy 2013 telecast last week. The rights had been acquired by Star India, and DD managed to get a court to force the former to share the ad-free feed with the pubcaster.

Now it's the turn of ESPN Software India to lay claim to the leadership position in the viewership stakes.

"The ICC Champions Trophy has proved to be a stupendous success for us with team India displaying a power-packed performance right through this marquee tournament. Cricket fans were glued to our network channels - Star Cricket, Star Cricket HD and Star Sports2 right through the tournament. The ratings are a good reflection of the traction we have received," informs ESPN Software India COO Vijay Rajput.

"Our channels- Star Cricket and Star Sports2 have contributed 70-75 per cent of the ratings, as compared to Doordarshan, in our core TG for the six shared matches of ICC Champions Trophy 2013 which is in line with contributions in previous events as well," he shares. "The final match aired on Star Sports2 and Star Cricket contributed to as much as 67 per cent of the ratings as compared to DD."

According to ESPN Software, Star Sports2 and Star Cricket delivered a TVR of 4.9 for the final match played on 23 June even though rain delayed the final match which ended past midnight. "This is the highest rating of any ODI played this year," Rajput shares triumphantly.

The tournament has helped the sportscaster add to the overall reach of Star Sports2 and Star Cricket, which went up 40 per cent to 109.8 million as compared to 78.5 million as compared to the tournament's last edition.

While the five India matches averaged a 3.5 TVR, overall the event delivered a rating of 2 TVR. "This is 13 per cent higher than the last edition, despite frequent rain delays and curtailments," he mentions.

The six shared matches while were aired ad free on Doordarshan; ESPN Star Sports aired the matches with TV commercials in between the overs.

"The numbers clearly reflect that consumers enjoyed watching Team India's superlative performance on our channels as well as our world class television presentation - in spite of the fact that we were not ad free," mentions Rajput. "I would also like to add that these ratings don't take into account sports fans who saw these matches on Star Cricket HD which would have made the contribution gap far greater," he adds.

For the 10 non-India matches, the channels delivered an impressive 1.3 TVR, which is significantly higher than the previous edition, ESPN Software officials reiterate.

Who is the real victor in this viewership stakes battle? The viewer does not really care: he got to see India bring the Champions Trophy home.
