MUMBAI: Bollywood hits and the
Indian Premier League (IPL) topped
the Google’s trending charts in India
this year. Mobile gaming and e-
commerce surged in popularity too,
Google India said while announcing
its annual Year End Zeitgeist.
Bollywood flick ‘Chennai Express’
topped the chart for Top Trending
Searches and gained wide popularity
nationwide. It was followed by the
IPL which broke records for the
amount of online searches for latest
scores and results.
Also topping the top trending
searches were ‘Aashiqui 2′, ‘Krrish 3′
and ‘Ram Leela’. The results diverged
from last year which reflected an
emphasis on utilitarian searches
relating to seeking information for
personal needs like shopping and
booking tickets.
Sachin Tendulkar topped the India’s
Top Searched Sportspersons in 2013
list, followed by Milkha Singh, MS
Dhoni, Lionel Messi and more.
Samsung, led the Top Searched
Mobile Brands list, followed by
Nokia, Micromax, Sony, Apple and
HTC.
The year also witnessed a rise in
searches for e-commerce sites, with
Flipkart and Olx.com topping the
chart for most searched online
shopping sites. Gaming emerged as a
popular category for the first time as
a critical mass of people searched
for games online.
Google India VP and managing
director sales and operations Rajan
Anandan said, “From a search trends
perspective, 2013 was clearly the
year of entertainment. Shah Rukh’s
Lungi Dance from Chennai Express,
the Bollywood romantic drama
Aashiqui 2, national heart-throbs
Salman Khan, Katrina Kaif and singer
Honey Singh ruled 2013 and drove
millions of Indians to the web.
Online shopping, banking, and e-
commerce also continued their
upward trend, a clear testimony to
Indians embracing online
transactions.”
Zeitgeist also reflected the year’s top
news moments that captured India’s
attention. The announcement of
Narendra Modi as the BJP’s Prime
Ministerial candidate was among the
top searched online news in India
this year, along with Karnataka’s
elections results, in addition to the
success of Indian athletes like Rahul
Dravid and Saina Nehwal.
Amongst the other searches, Sunny
Leone topped the India’s top
personalities list. Flipkart was India’s
top searched shopping website,
Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif led the
India’s top searched Bollywood
actors male and female respectively
while Narendra Modi was the top
searched politician. The top mobile
game was bagged by Temple Run and
IRCTC became the top searched
travel website.
IGNOU was the top searched
university, Macau the top searched
travel international destinations,
Indigo the top searched airline, Satta
Matka the top searched online game
and Whatsapp the top searched
mobile app on mobile.
Local entertainment was also
popularly searched on mobile this
year. Top three searches on mobile
were Restaurants, Bars and Movies
followed by Coffee, Cricket score and
fast food.
Google reveals the internet ‘Zeitgeist’
through an exploration of the over
one trillion search queries that it
receives each year.
