Govt approves proposals worth Rs 3,500 crore for AIR, Doordarshan

NEW DELHI: In an effort to upgrade Prasar Bharati's broadcast infrastructure and network, government today approved proposals worth Rs 3,500 crore for AIR and Doordarshan which include setting up of TV transmitters along the Indo-Nepal border.

The transmitters are also targeted to cover 65 per cent of the population of Nepal.

The other schemes approved by the Union Cabinet include proposals like expanding Doordarshan's DTH platform and establishing infrastructure for AIR.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) had approved the proposal of Information and Broadcasting ministry regarding the 12th Plan scheme of All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan "Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development.

The CCEA has given its nod to some schemes of the 11th Plan which are at different stages of implementation and also some new schemes, an official statement said.

Under the new schemes, eight Television Terrestrial Transmitters are proposed along the Indo-Nepal border and these are targeted to cover 65 per cent of the population of Nepal, the statement said.

As part of the 11th Plan scheme, the capacity of DD's DTH is being expanded from 59 channels to 97 channels in the 12th Plan, it is proposed to be increased to 250 channels.

Another proposal under the 12th Plan is related to installation of 23 Digital Terrestrial Transmitter (DTTs). ..
Provisions have also been kept for modernisation of existing equipment or facilities in studios and satellite uplinks which are essential to sustain ongoing activities and also for High Definition Television (HDTV) studio facilities at Chennai and Kolkata, the statement said.

For AIR, FM expansion at 118 places besides eight FM broadcasting set ups along the Indo-Nepal border, replacement of old FM transmitters at 77 locations and six MW transmitters by FM Transmitters, digitalisation of 29 studios and creation of archival facility at Guwahati are envisaged.

What 250 channels on FD..first of all they reach to 125 channels which they have planned to do by march 2014 but it also late now and now planning for 250 it will take years to do this by DD India

They havent implemented 11th plan, and are talking abt 12th. :dodgy

Good news for FD users but might take years if not dacades....All FTA regional channels should be placed on FD but pvt DTH wont allow it....
 
30,59,97,120,150,200,250 channels in freedish and coming dvb t2 technology 600 channels after we can hear ,again coming 500channels ,,

NEW DELHI: Doordarshan will expand the capacity of its free direct-to-home television service DD Direct Plus to 250 channels by 2017.

The public broadcaster is already working on a plan to increase the number of channels it offers on DD Direct Plus to 97 from 59 channels currently.

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved a Rs 3,500 crore proposal from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry on the 12th five year plan for All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan - Broadcasting Infrastructure and Network Development.

The scheme covers continuing schemes of the 11th Plan and new schemes of the 12th Plan that ends in March 2017. The continuing schemes of AIR and Doordarshan are at different stages of implementation and are scheduled to be completed in phases by 2015-16 by Doordarshan and by 2016-17 by AIR.

Under the new schemes, eight television terrestrial transmitters are also proposed along the Indo-Nepal border and these are targeted to cover 65 per cent of the population of Nepal.

This will ensure sustainability of DTH and increase revenue of Prasar Bharati. During the 11th Plan, 40 digital terrestrial transmitters were sanctioned and these are under implementation.

In the 12th Plan, 23 additional DTTs are proposed to be installed. Provisions have also been made for modernisation of existing equipment /facilities in studios and satellite uplinks which are essential to sustain ongoing activities and also for high definition television (HD TV) studio facilities at Chennai and Kolkata.

AIR FM expansion at 118 locations besides eight FM broadcasting set ups along the Indo-Nepal border, replacement of old FM transmitters at 77 locations and replace six MW transmitters with FM Transmitters, digitalisation of 29 studios and creation of archival facility at Guwahati are envisaged. Strengthening of training facilities, R&D and introduction of e-Governance with limited application of enterprise resource planning (ERP) are also envisaged in this scheme.

250 channels by 2017...hope DD will implement this ! There is a need to raise FD channels capacity to add more FTA channels as FTA & many regional channels require a platform to survive.
