i think d2h and dish tv will surely add this channel. :tup

The absorbing stories of Bear Grylls, who flirts with danger on “Man Vs Wild” (Discovery Channel), can now be heard in Tamil. And, not just this adventure series, many other popular shows on the Channel too — welcome to 24-hour Discovery Channel Tamil!

The idea of a dedicated Tamil channel (broadcast commence today) got a consensus among Discovery's think-tank after laborious research. Rajiv Bakshi, vice-president – marketing, South Asia, Discovery Networks, says: “Tamil was chosen after our study made it clear that television penetration in the State is very deep and Tamilians strongly identify with their language. In addition, the advertising outlook is extremely positive. The channel — available on analogue and digital platforms — targets Tamilians across the country.”

Quality checks
The most popular shows on Discovery Channel will be dubbed into Tamil, and Bakshi speaks of three layers of quality checks — involving studios in Mumbai, Delhi and Singapore — before the dubbed programmes go on air.

The team has already been put through special drills over three months. Many of the shows deal with science and technology and natural history, and Bakshi says special effort has been taken for apt translations of technical terms.

Local content that reflects aspects of Tamil Nadu makes only a small percentage of the offering, the primary aim being to help Tamil viewers take in the wonders of world.

Says Bakshi: “Irresistible themes, brilliant visuals and lucid narration have been our strength, and to do justice to this reputation, we'll have to wait for great local subjects that will make for a great viewing experience.”

The channel is expected to broadcast two specials on Tamil Nadu by the end of this month — “Thaipusam” (explores the reasons devotees put themselves through difficult acts of self-mortification) and “The Lost Temples Of India” (discusses the painstaking effort that went into the making of temples in Tamil Nadu).

Popular shows dubbed into Tamil include “How Do They Do It” (throws light on the intricate working processes of simple and commonplace products of technology), “Swamp Brothers” (the adventures of two brothers ‘who work with dangerous animals in the swamps of Florida'), “Rising: Ground Zero” (takes a look at the rebuilding frenzy gripping the area damaged in the 9/11 attack on the Twin Towers) and “Damage Control” (about athletes coping with the wear and tear of their bodies).
