Tokyo -- Disney is among companies that will bow satellite channels when Japan ups the number of slots available from 12 to 31 by March, per the Assn. of the Promotion of Digital Broadcasting.
Taking over frequencies left vacant by the end of analog broadcasting in July, 12 channels (including one for radio) will bow Oct. 1 and another seven in March.
Wowow, Japan's biggest entertainment pay channel, will add Wowow Live and Wowow Cinema channels for a total of three services; VOD service Star Channel will debut three HD channels. Satellite platform Sky Perfect Entertainment will offer its new Sky Perfect channel free-to-air for the first year.
Disney will enter the biz in March with two channels while Imagica TV will debut a 24-hour pic channel.
