Disney India, which owns and operates eight TV channels in kids, youth and movie genres, is planning to expand its bouquet by launching more channels in the 2016–17 fiscal.

While the company is still at the drawing board as far as new launches are concerned, it is evaluating opportunities in existing and new genres as well as HD space.

However, the cash-guzzling Hindi GEC space is not on the company’s radar as of now.

“In the last year, we have seen a lot of activity and new highlights in the BARC scheme of things so we are looking at new opportunities.

Going forward, some of that will be in new genres and some of that will be in HD space. I can’t comment further right now on that. We are still on the strategy table.

The new launches could happen in the next financial year,” Disney India Media Channels VP and head of revenue Nikhil Gandhi told TelevisionPost.com. Gandhi said that there are lots of expansion opportunities in the TV broadcast market.

“We have a different strategy as far as our broadcast business is concerned. We believe that there are lots of opportunities in the spaces that we operate in as well as the new spaces that we have identified.

We don’t necessarily need to be in the GEC space to be a serious player,” he added.

Disney’s network comprises Disney Channel, Hungama TV, Disney Junior, and Disney XD in the kids space, Bindass and Bindass PLAY in youth space, and UTV Action and UTV in the movie space

So they are planing for HD feeds of some channels.

All other Asian countries have HD feeds of Disney & Disney XD,
Only we are missing,
I hope this year we will get Disney HD.

Disney, which had ended its distribution alliance with
IndiaCast Media Distribution last year, has concluded
major carriage deals with leading distribution platforms
including direct-to-home (DTH) operator Airtel Digital TV
and multi-system operators (MSOs) like Hathway Cable & Datacom, DEN Networks, GTPL Hathway, InCable and
Fastway Transmission.

“In the last five months, we have been able to conclude all our MSO deals. We have renewed deal with Airtel Digital TV. Negotiations with Sun Direct and Reliance Big TV are underway. We had multi-year deals with other DTH
operators,” he stated.

Disney has also signed a two-year deal with headend-in-
the-sky (HITS) platform NXT Digital on a cost-per-
subscriber (CPS) basis.
