Disney to cut back on TV, sports biz in India

The broadcaster also plans to move niche sporting events such Formula One and English Premier League exclusively to its OTT platform, Disney Plus-Hotstar. "The audience for these sports is not the typical cricket audience, neither do they generate as much advertiser interest as cricket does. Therefore, it makes better sense for the broadcaster to move it to Hotstar where subscription revenues are much better than TV. If Hotstar creates a separate Formula One package and offers it for Rs 250, the revenue monetisation will be much better," explains a former Star executive, who says that barring cricket all the other sports churn huge losses for the broadcaster

Disney-Star puts sports biz under lens; churn inevitable

this is a bad move.... specially for fans who wants too watch other sports then cricket.... ,y father is 75 year old retired person he only watches sports and news channels...he is fan of football, tennis as well...for him using ott platform would be difficult... rather then cutting out sports and moving it too ott the should shut down useless channels.... that way they will save cost....who will subscribe to their sports channels only to watch cricket....ODIs and t20s are also available on DD sports....people will subscribe on match day and then remove it the other or before day ends that way they will make huge losses....

Why not buy AEW and NJPW rights? Huge fan base is there in India. It also guaranteed fresh content along with pay per views every month. In UK AEW's viewership has surpassed likes of WWE who are market leader in the segment.

Star should ShutDown StarBharat & exit the second GEC Race. Invest the money to create more fiction & non fiction Property for Flagship StarPlus. Retaining StarPlus as Flagship for Urban & StarUstav for Rural Audience.

i totally agree with you bro... that way they can compete sony sports channels....Star should concentrate on bringing fresh sporting content, how they got rights to broadcast baseball they can all get NFL or rugby..... or if they only want to be Cricket centric sports channel then they should go for maximum Cricketing rights (getting rights of all cricketing boards ) and let Sony handle other sports like football tennis F1 etc

Without fresh sporting content every week. People are adding and dropping the channels when the series ends.

If star exits English GEC. Only viacom18 and Zee will be left . It will become duopoly.
