Eye on polls, Shiv Sena plans Marathi news channel

With an eye on the upcoming polls, the Shiv Sena is planning to launch its own Marathi news channel. The party already has a presence in the media with a cartoon weekly, Marmik, launched in August 1960, a daily, Saamna, launched in January 1989, and a Hindi newspaper, Dopahar Ka Saamna.

“We are considering a proposal in this regard,” a senior Sena leader told DNA. He added that work on this venture is likely to be expedited after the issue of the Shiv Sena chief’s memorial at Shivaji Park is resolved.

"We will try to set up the channel before 2014,” said the Sena leader, adding that there is no deadline. The late Shiv Sena chief, Bal Thackeray, was initially a cartoonist with the Free Press Journal. He quit the newspaper in 1959 and launched Marmik, which was the first Marathi political cartoon weekly, with his younger brother Shrikant, MNS chief Raj Thackeray’s father.
Thackeray’s writings and caustic cartoons in Marmik on the plight of the Marathi manoos laid the ground for the Sena’s birth in 1966.

After Bal Thackeray’s demise, his son Uddhav was anointed as the editor of the party’s publications. Many politicians in Maharashtra have a presence in the media, including the Pawars, who own Sakal, the Dardas, who own Lokmat, and revenue minister Narayan Rane, who owns Prahaar.

Late former chief minister Vilasrao Deshmukh controlled Ekmatnewspaper, which has a presence largely in the Marathwada region. Jayant Patil of the Peasants and Workers Party runs Krishival newspaper in Raigad district. In spite of the Shiv Sena’s birth being rooted in the media, the party has always had an uneasy relationship with the fourth estate.
