With growing subscriber-base, improved revenue and reduction in subscriber-acquisition costs, a slew of global satellite television operators are now eye eying a slice of the Indian DTH sector. These include DirectTV and Dish Network (from US), Bell TV (Canada), BSAT (Japan), Tricolour TV (Russia) and Foxtel (Australia) among others that are looking for a foothold in the fast-growing Indian DTH firms, two persons familiar with the matter said.

Currently, only News Corp (Tata Sky) and Malaysia’s Astro (Sun Direct TV) have a direct participation in the six-player Indian DTH industry.

The anticipated hike in FDI cap to 74% is the trigger for these international DTH operators to explore business tie-ups with country’s six private DTH operators, sources said.

Direct alliance, stake-sale and tie-ups for content (foreign DTH operators own exclusive rights to special events) are the options being explored by the global DTH operators.
