IMDb is one of the most popular entertainment database websites and it has now finally made its way to India. Any movie buff would tell you how great a news that is. The site has been a staple for anyone who wants any information on movies, TV shows, and personalities. Unfortunately, it was limited to non-Bollywood films uptill now. However, Col Needham, who is the founder and CEO of IMDb, today announced the launch of a dedicated India page on IMDb, which will cater to entertainment fans in the country.

Apart from providing a database of the Indian movies and TV shows, IMDb India will also have India-specific features like a “What’s Trending in India” section. As the name suggests, the section show the most viewed or most searched entertainment topics on the website. Additionally, the trending section also shows what’s currently popular on Amazon Prime Video. Meanwhile, movies and shows on Amazon Prime Video are listed with IMDb ratings.

While it was possible to look up Indian movies in the international site as well, however, regional movies never made it to the site, just the popular ones was up on its database. But with the India page, IMDb will have a larger catalogue and a lot more detail and India-centric features for the Indian audience. Also, with the update now IMDb’s database of Indian films includes movies in Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, and Bengali. Further, the popular “Quizzes” section will now test your knowledge on movies, shows, actors – both domestic and international.

During the launch, Needham said, “I encourage you to visit IMDb and join the community of passionate movie fans across the world. I have 234 Indian movies on my watchlist currently, and my most memorable Indian film is 3 id*ots (2009). What is yours? Tell us using the hashtag #IMDbIndia.”

Of course, Indians are delighted by the news, and have been celebrating the announcement on the social media.

India being a fast growing market for online streaming content, a lot of foreign companies have been working on India-specific content. According to the Q3 report by Akamai Technologies’ State of the Internet (SOTI), for the first time, India joined the top 10 countries in the third quarter boasting the largest quarterly gain by far amongst the group as its IPv6 adoption rate rose 715 percent from 2.1 percent adoption to 17 percent adoption in IPv6 traffic.

Like IMDb, Netflix and Amazon Prime Video also made its way to India this year. All these companies have been dedicatedly working on content that is aimed for Indian audience in particular. After going live in India yesterday, Amazon Prime Video also announced that it is working on producing original content in India for India. The platform has announced a series of TV shows and movies that have been produced in India, with renowned producers and directors such as Anurag Kashyap, Farhan Akhtar, Prasoon Joshi and All India Bakchod.

Even Netflix recently announced that it has partnered with Indian film production company called Red Chillies Entertainment (RCE), which is owned by Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan. This will give Netflix members in India and globally, exclusive subscription video-on-demand access to RCE produced films as well as new films that will screen in Indian theaters in the next three years. The highlight of this partnership is the fact that it will bring movies starring Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan exclusively to the platform. This is also the first time Netflix has signed a partnership with an Indian film production company.
