ntel Capital has invested in India's TV channel guide What's-On-India, demonstrating its confidence in a new media startup.

The Intel-led new round of series B funding has also got participation from What's-On-India's existing private equity investors Sequoia Capital and Nexus Venture Partners.

Intel, which has a $250 million India-dedicated fund, did not disclose the amount it has invested in What's-On-India. But it is part of Intel's recent $20 million investment in six Indian companies.

The investment is aimed at expanding the technology vertical into new and emerging technologies as well as strengthening the company's owned media portfolio.

What's-On-India founder and CEO Atul Phadnis said, "Over the last three years, What's-On-India has made tremendous advances both on the technology front as well as the media businesses. We are delighted to have Intel Capital as an investor in this journey given Intel's focus on smart TV and other technology areas."

The company's technology vertical powers EPG Metadata content from 500+ TV channels into more than 20 million set-top-boxes and devices across cable, direct-to-home, IPTV, MobileTV, Smart-TVs and tablets.

The company also runs the What's-On-India, TV Guidance channel that is currently available in more than 30 million households across DTH and cable. The company aims to increase the reach of the channel to 40 million by the end of this year.

"Smart TVs, digital set-top boxes and other IPTV devices are transforming the living room and changing the way people consume content. As these new gadgets get embraced, Whats-on-India is well positioned, through their technology and content, to create compelling user experiences," said Intel Capital MD, Asia Pacific Sudheer Kuppam.

The company has recently launched apps on Android OS and Nokia Ovi store. It is also readying apps for iPad, iPhone and BlackBerry handsets.
