MUMBAI: Hollywood creature feature ‘Jurassic World’ has beaten Vidya Balan- and Emraan Hashmi-starrer romantic drama ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahaani’ at the box office.

Creating box-office tremors globally, ‘Jurassic World’ has had a better start than Bollywood’s new releases in the week.

Positive word of mouth and favourable reviews helped ‘Jurassic World’ to collect Rs 19.95 crore (Rs 199.5 million) in its opening weekend.

Globally, the movie has mopped up a whopping $524.1 million in its four-dayrun at the box office. This is the biggest worldwide debut of all time.

‘Hamari Adhuri Kahaani’, on the other hand, received lukewarm response at the box office in its initial run. The movie netted Rs 16.12 crore (Rs 161.2 million) at the box office in its first weekend.

Written by Mahesh Bhatt, ‘Hamari Adhuri Kahani’ is about a single mother Vasudha (Balan) whose husband Hari (Rajkummar Rao) disappeared five years ago. In absence of Hari, Balan develops an affair with a hotel magnate (Hashmi) until her past comes back to haunt her.

Directed by Mohit Suri and produced by Mahesh Bhatt under the banner Vishesh Films and Fox Star Studios, the film is based on the love story of Bhatt’s parents Nanabhai Bhatt, Shirin Mohammad Ali and his stepmother.

The film has been panned by critics, with many terming Balan’s character to be regressive and the plot line having the appearance of an old-school melodrama.

On the release day, the film netted Rs 5.04 crore (Rs 50.4 million), which marginally increased to Rs 5.14 crore (Rs 51.4 million) on Day 2. Even on Sunday, it could garner only Rs 5.94 crore (Rs 59.4 million) as it failed to attract audiences to cinema halls.

However, the Hollywood release of the week ‘Jurassic World’ performed much better at the box office. The film was released on Thursday, 11 June, but collected only Rs 60 lakh (Rs 6 million) on the release day. The collection picked up during the weekend due to positive reviews.

Meanwhile, Zoya Akhtar’s ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ netted Rs 56.6 crore (Rs 566 million) in its first week. The movie had collected Rs 37.03 crore (Rs 370.3 million) in its first weekend.

Kangana Ranaut continued her successful run at the box office with ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’. The film grossed Rs 136.7 crore (Rs 1.37 billion) in three weeks. In its fourth weekend also, the film collected another Rs 5.10 crore (Rs 51 million), thus taking its 24-day total to Rs 141.79 crore (Rs 1.42 billion).
