Lakhs of Tv Sets in TN Face 24-hour Blackout From Today.
MADURAI: More than a lakh television sets will witness a 24 hours blackout starting from 6am on Wednesday as the members of the cable operator's guild in Madurai district decided to go on a one-day strike against the recent moves of the government. The local cable TV operators feel that government is trying to suppress them by introducing payment through only net banking, levying interest on late payment and forcing them to use bill books provided by the state.
A group of representatives of the cable operator's guild on Tuesday petitioned the district collector to take necessary steps and also take the issue to the government's knowledge. If their demands are not met they threatened to indulge in further protests in the future attracting the government's attention, the members said.
There are around 400 local cable operators in Madurai district attached to the association. A Pandi, president of the guild, said, "While we have taken the issue of government's strict enforcement to collect Rs 70, to the court, the state is forcing us to collect subscription charges using only the bill book provided by it. The bill book is super-scribed with the government's name and emblem. All the investments in the business are ours. We are taking care of all the charges involved in setlting if any problem arises. The government is not spending anything. It has simply taken over it and acting as if it is the owner."
"The government is also not providing important channels like Ten Sports, Discovery, Sun News and Murasu, which people like to watch. We are at the receiving end as they call up and reprimand for deficiency in service. At the same time the government is telecasting some unnecessary channels. We strongly suspect that it is done for some political reasons," Pandi alleged.
According to the new guidelines they need to pay the collected subscription money only through net banking, which they are not familiar with. They strongly opposed the government's move to levy interest for late payment. They also wanted to continue using their private bills instead of government's move to use bill book issued by it.
