Want to launch a new television channel? Wait, licence approvals may take years. As Prashant Chothani, owner of a clutch of music and travel channels, has been waiting to get a licence to operate another Bengali music channel.
Broadcasters have approached Information and Broadcasting minister Arun Jaitley to talk about such delays.
Many have applied for new channels way back in 2012 and these have not been processed. Meanwhile, the marketplace has changed and many find their original business models outdated.
The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has laid the blame on the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA).
MHA has not responded to letters to expedite the process by putting in place a common methodology wherein broadcasters with no problematic background can be given easy clearances with an undertaking that their licences could be revoked in case the IB reports were adverse, I&B ministry officials have told The Economic Times.
Broadcasters also met Home Minister Rajnath Singh. It seems that the MHA has advised the MIB to give the nod to all pending clearances, albeit with the condition that the approval will be revoked if an adverse intelligence report crops up.
As reported by TelevisionPost.com, the MIB has received a total of 850 MSO licence applications for digital addressable system (DAS) areas.
There are nearly 650 applications pending even as the deadline for Phase III of DAS is approaching fast. There is also a pile of nearly 300 renewal cases of TV channels
