The Indian version of popular television game
show Who Wants to be a Millionaire, Kaun Banega
Crorepati (KBC), is being launched in the Bhojpuri
language by Mahuaa TV.
The show’s host, the veteran actor Shatrughan Sinha, has now completed filming the series in Kolkata, and visited people in the City of Joy to promote next week’s launch. “I believe that the show Ke Bani Crorepati is all set to [provide] television content in the Bhojpuri language,” said Mr Sinha. “It’s a tribute to the Bhojpuri language and the community that an international format like Who Wants to be a Millionaire is being made in the Bhojpuri language.” Like elsewhere in the 110 countries that have produced versions of the TV game show, contestants will attempt to answer 15 questions, with INR 1 crore prize money at stake. A celebrity edition of the Bhojpuri version of Kaun Banega Crorepati will feature Bollywood star Goyinda, singer Udit Narayan, former finance minister Yashwant Sinha and the Dabangg girl Sonakshi Sinha – the daughter of the KBC host. Mahuaa Media Pvt Ltd (MMPL) says it plans to add films and music to its current portfolio of news and entertainment television, and may also increase the amount of regional language programming it provides. MMPL currently operates four channels catering to the Bhojpuri and Bengali communities. The entertainment channel Mahuaa TV and Mahuaa News broadcast in Bhojpuri, while the entertainment channel Mahuaa Bangla and Mahuaa Khobor news channel are in Begali. “We have lined up a pipeline of exciting content for our viewers, both [in] Bhojpuri and Bengali, and KBC will be the first of the block,” said Yubaraj Bhattacharya, chief executive officer, Mahuaa TV. “We want to scale new heights in creating local language content and KBC is a taste of things to come. We are proud to collaborate with Siddharth Basu and Big Synergy in taking this pioneering step and producing a world class show in these two languages.” BIG Synergy Media, which produced the series, is now part of the BIG Entertainment arm of Reliance ADAG, with production facilities in Delhi, Chennai, Kolkata and Mumbai. It began life in 1988, as one of India’s first independent television production houses, and now produces a variety of shows including India’s Got Talent for Colors, Aap ki Kacheri and Sach ka Saamna for Star Plus, and Dus a Dum on Sony Entertainment TV. MMPL – whose channels are available in Bengal, Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern UP, as well as on direct to home satellite packages - was founded by regional media veteran Mr P K Tewari, and is wholly owned by Century Communication Ltd. It is a sister concern of Indian post production facility Pixion. KBC will be shown on Mahuaa TV at 9pm from Monday to Friday, starting 6 June 2011.
