The Department of Electronics and IT ( DeitY) has issued the Electronics and Information Technology Goods (Requirements for Compulsory Registration) Order, 2012, (http:// 404 Not Found bringing into force a scheme for mandatory regime of registration of identified 15 electronic products so that these products meet specified safety standards. They include video games, laptop/ notebook/tablet, Plasma/LCD/ LED televisions, Microwave Ovens, Printers and Scanners, Telephone Answering Machines, Electronic Musical Systems etc.
The intention of making the registration of electronic and IT goods mandatory with BIS is to ensure that the safety standards prescribed for these goods are complied with. On examining the process for the registration under the BIS Rules it appears that the same will be applicable to manufacturers, including foreign manufacturers (who can appoint an authorized representative located in India for this purpose), and the same shall be carried out by submitting a test report of the sample of the article from any laboratory in India recognised by BIS.
