The first remake of Nagraj Manjule’s 2016 blockbuster romance drama Sairat is set to go on the floors this month with new faces

Mirror had earlier reported (May 20) that the year’s biggest Marathi hit, Nagraj Manjule’s romance-drama Sairat, will be remade in multiple languages. Now, we hear that a Punjabi version, produced by Zee Studios and White Hill Productions, is ready to go on the floors this month and will be directed by Pankaj Batra who has previously helmed the Punjabi hit, Bambukat.

The filmmaker, who is currently on a recce for the film, told Mirror, “We will cast new faces in the lead and should finalise them by next week. The Punjabi version will be slightly different from the original. It will be visually brighter and we will be shooting on the Punjab-Rajasthan border. Instead of Andhra Pradesh where the couple escape to in the original film’s second half, we will proceed to Himachal Pradesh. We are shooting during winter so we can capture the snow.”

Despite the changes, Batra intends to keep the film’s soul intact. “The romance remains the same with changes made to the story and treatment. Punjab doesn’t have a caste problem so our story is about power play and egos. The girl’s father is an MLA who owns a lot of land, her lover’s father works on one of his farms. But in our film too, the girl is confident and bold while the boy is naïve,” Batra reveals.

Sairat’s soundtrack was a huge hit, including the party number “Zingat”. Batra isn’t worried about living up to expectations. “Punjabi music is popular the world over, we are doing our best to match up,” he asserts.

Akash Chawla, Business Head of Zee Studios, informed Mirror that the script has been locked and they are looking to releasing the film on July 14.

“We will also announce the Telugu version soon,” the spokesperson added.

Sairat is also being remade in Kannada with Rinku Rajguru who played the lead in the original and will be directed by S Narayan. Kannada actor Peri Nataraja has been cast as the male lead.

Buzz is, a Hindi remake is also being planned. It will reportedly introduce Boney Kapoor and Sridevi’s daughter Jhanvi opposite Suneil Shetty’s son Ahan
