The Ministry of Information & Broadcasting (MIB) has granted licences to 163 TV channels in the last five years, as per data till December 2014.

Minister of State (MoS) for Information & Broadcasting Rajyavardhan Rathore also said that information regarding the number of functional channels is being collated and will be laid on the table of the house (Lok Sabha) subsequently.

The ministry does not have mandate over issues relating to the wages and terms of employment of journalists and other employees of TV news channels, Rathore added.

The MIB has granted licences to 832 TV channels till 9 April 2014, out of which 406 are news and current affairs channels and 426 are non-news and current affairs channels. The ministry has permitted 703 TV channels to uplink from as well as downlink into India.

36 TV channels have been permitted to uplink from India but not permitted to downlink here. 93 TV channels have been permitted to only downlink into India (uplinked from aboard).
