With most of the Hindi news channels having presence on Prasar Bharati’s free DTH platform Freedish, NDTV Group’s Hindi news channel NDTV India has decided to go free-to-air (FTA) from 8 April across all distribution platforms.

NDTV India is currently a pay channel priced Rs 8.02 on non-addressable platforms and Rs 3.37 on addressable and direct-to-home (DTH) platforms. NDTV India will be the only FTA channel in the NDTV bouquet comprising NDTV 24×7, NDTV Profit/Prime and NDTV Good Times.

The company has issued a public notice stating “NDTV India which is a pay channel now would be a free-to-air channel in India across all platforms effective midnight 8 April 2016″.

Aaj Tak, IBN7 and Zee News are the national Hindi news channels that are pay. Most other Hindi news channels are FTA.

Freedish has emerged as a preferable destination for Hindi news channels due to its vast reach. Not only are FTA channels like India TV, News24, News Nation and India News available on Freedish, even pay channels like Aaj Tak and IBN7 have launched on the platform realising the immense potential of the platform. ABP News is the only exception among the leading FTA news channels in Hindi.
