I Movie Review: The wasteful cinema by the self-indulgent & self-obsessed

It’s another Rs.100 crore film by one
the greatest filmmakers from
southern Indian shores. It’s not a
film. It’s a bonfire of hard currency
to satisfy the narcissism of a
filmmaker and a star. It’s a cocktail
of ‘I’, ‘My’, ‘Myself The Greatest’
viruses. And look at the irony of it;
the film is also titled ‘I’.

Self-obsession & self-indulgence
makes you blind to reason and
reality. That’s what seems to be the
case here. The helmer and hero of
APARICHIT come together as a team
yet again. You expect something
brilliant from the combo. They
disappoint hugely.

It begins with an ugly and deformed
hunchback abducting a well-known
model Diya (Amy Jackson) who is
about to get married. We soon go
into the flashback. Lingeshan
(Vikram) is a body builder. He has
two obsessions – 1. Winning Mr.
Tamil Nadu and eventually Mr. India
title in body building tournaments, 2.
Beautiful and very successful model
Diya. John (Upen Patel), a leading
male model, has been promoting
Diya. He expects her to return the
favor by sleeping with him. She
refuses. She is thrown out of major
advertising campaigns by the
modeling agency on John’s insistence.

Her career is in doldrums. She is
about to lose a key campaign to be
shot in China but the modeling
agency agrees to help her.

Lingeshan wins Mr. Tamil Nadu title
defeating a goon. He gets to do
cheap commercials. Diya had met
him a few times. She, with the help
of a family friend and physician Dr.
Vasudevan (Suresh Gopi), convinces
Lingeshan to work with her. She gets
a top-notch ‘gay’ stylist to transform
earthy Lingeshan into a smart &
urbane Lee. The modeling agency
also succeeds in convincing a key
client to drop John and have Vikram
as the male model in his campaign.

Diya & Lingeshan fly to China for the
shoot. Diya fakes her love for
Lingeshan to ensure he is
comfortable and natural during the
shoot. Lingeshan takes it very
seriously. The gay stylist Osmaan has
also fallen in love with Lingeshan and
he/she tells him the truth about
Diya’s fake love. He confronts Diya
who admits it. Lingeshan is heart-
broken. But soon Diya realizes she is
actually in love with Lingeshan.

ALONE Movie Review: Bipasha Basu and Karan Singh Grover's flick is torture in slow-motion

ALONE can be best described as
torture in slow-motion. For a horror
film to be effective, it cannot get
repetitive. How long can creaking
doors, dark nights, and eerie sounds
scare you? To a point yes; after a
point it becomes a cruel joke, not
only on the audience but also on the
characters on-screen who are trying
their best to put up a decent act.

For starters, I wonder if any man
would fall in love with a conjoined
twin. I mean it is cruel to love one
while the other is joined to her
sister. How does he plan to take a
relationship like this forward?
This is the premise on which ALONE
hangs. Sanjana and Anjana are two
conjoined twins. As they grow up and Sanjana falls in love, she decides to go in for a ‘separation operation’.

She survives while Anajana dies.

By the way, both Sanjana and Anjana
are Bipasha Basu. Kabir (Karan Singh
Grover), who has been in love with
Sanjana ever since they were in
school, is now married to Sanjana.

They have to return to Kerala after
Sanjana’s mother meets with an
accident and this is where (at their
ancestral home) things start taking an ugly turn.

Sanjana holds herself responsible for
the death of Anjana as it was she
who insisted upon the surgery.

Anjana’s troubled soul meanwhile is
looking to avenge her death as
Sanjana’s stay at her home gets to be
a nightmare. At first, Kabir feels that
Sanjana’s guilt is creating a problem,
but when he takes her to a doctor
friend, he realizes that the problem
is much deeper. He decides to
devote more time with Sanjana to
help her get through this difficult
phase.

The movie moves at a very slow pace
and even the beginning makes no
sense when the mother is attacked,
six years after the botched up
surgery.

CRAZY CUKKAD FAMILY Movie Review: From crazy to preachy...

When a comedy gets preachy it turns
into a tragedy. This is exactly what
happens to CRAZY CUKKAD FAMILY
which starts on a hilarious note and
ends up telling us what is right and
wrong. The end is more like a TV
serial. This is sad, because first-time
director Ritesh Menon had begun in a scorching manner.

Add to his benefit a cast that stands
out with their performances. But the
writing gives way mid-way and
Prakash Jha Productions’ attempt
away from politicized drama to
comedy takes a nosedive.

Mr Berry, a wealthy man, has gone
into a coma for the third time. Twice
before, he has come out of it, much
to the chagrin of his four children
who are waiting for the old man to
‘croak’. Why? Because they all have
varied lifestyles and to feed their
greed they need a part of the huge
property that the old man is sitting
on. They take loans in the hope they
will pay off once a share of the
property comes to them.

But the old man has a clause
inserted in the Will where they all
have to be married before it [the
Will] can be read. So the youngest
who comes from Auckland, is forced
to marry the driver’s daughter, just
so that they can get to read the Will.
Till the interval, the plot is thick and
performances crisp. It stays true to
its genre. Post that, it plummets.

Watch the film for some spirited
performances from the siblings
played by Shilpa Shukla, Swanand
Kirkire, Kushal Punjabi and Siddharth
Sharma. Watch it also for Ninad
Kamat, Nora Fatehi and the rest.
A word of appreciation for Shilpa,
Swanand and Ninad all three who
stand out with their performances.

After her critically acclaimed B. A.
PASS, Shilpa gets into the skin of
another character which is as diverse
and as complicated. One actor to
watch out for, for variations in
acting.

SHARAFAT GAYI TEL LENE Movie Review: This Zayed Khan starrer
lacks imagination

The only bright spot in this ‘oily’ film
is Zayed Khan’s performance. The
guy restricts himself well to play this
‘much-in-love’ boyfriend, who is sort
of hen-pecked. A middle-class man
working with an architect, his
monthly salary is Rs 25,000. He is
now engaged to marry. He is an
upright man, who will take no
shortcuts to success.

His roommate friend Sam (Ranvijay
Singh) is just the opposite. He
spends the entire night chatting with
unknown people on the internet and
spends the day sleeping in the hope
of hitting the jackpot someday.

But the jackpot looks kindly on
Prithvi Khurana (Zayed Khan). One
day, at the ATM, he realizes that his
bank balance has jumped to Rs 100
crores. But before he can settle down
with this euphoric news, he gets a
call from bhai (Dawood) who tells
him that the money belongs to him
and it was he who deposited it in his
account. He will now have to give Rs
10 cr each at different point in time
to the people he informs him about.
Prithvi, for his efforts, stands to gain
a hefty commission.

Prithvi is now in fear as bhai has
promised to harm his girlfriend (Tina
Desai) if anything goes wrong. So he
seeks the help of Sam to help him in
this mission to give away the wealth.

The movie has no suspense, is a
bland comedy and even the ‘thriller’
bit isn’t thrilling enough to make this
film what it was intended to be—a
comedy/thriller.

Anupam Kher is by now seasoned
enough to walk through the sets for
a role like this and ‘can’ his shots in
half a day. A cool way to hit the
‘jackpot’!

The movie lacks imagination just like
its name!
Rating: 1/5

TEVAR Movie Review: Meet the all powerful Obelix of Bollywood

Obelix is a popular character of a
French comic book series Asterix,
developed by René Goscinny and
Albert Uderzo. He is a fat amiable
good-hearted Gaul and an all-
powerful associate of an older and
wiser Asterix. He is a one-man army
that can annihilate Roman army
legions without even breaking a tiny
drop of sweat.

The new age Bollywood film star
Arjun Kapoor plays an Obelix in
TEVAR. The film is all about
showcasing his physical prowess.

Pintu (Arjun Kapoor) is a young good-
hearted Kabaddi player from Agra.

When he plays Kabaddi, it’s only him
who plays. He often takes up punga
with goons & eve teasers. He also
sings and dances with his gang of
friends all around the town and on
housetops. His father, SP city, Shukla
Ji (Raj Babbar), is fed up with his
wayward ways, and mother (Deepti
Naval) dotes on him. He also has a
bespectacled and extremely talkative
sister.

It’s one of his visits to Mathura that
pits him against a ‘bahubali’ Gajendra
Singh (Manoj Vajpayee) over Radhika
(Sonakshi Sinha), the sister of a
spunky TV Journalist. Gajendra fell in
love with her accidentally after
watching her perform an item
number to the tune of religious
sounding song. He wants to marry
her. The girl’s brother refuses the
proposal and dares to threaten
Gajendra and his political patron to
expose them with a sting operation.
