Sri Lanka's Maharaja group to be awarded satellite pay TV license.

MTV Channel (Pvt) Ltd, a terrestrial broadcaster which is a unit of Sri Lanka's Maharaja group will be awarded a direct-to-home satellite licence, the island's telecom regulator has said, as the industry is going through technological changes.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka said in a public notice that it is considering recommending to the President of Sri Lanka to issue a DTH license to MTV Channel for five years.

By the way, this is an old news and Maharaja already postponed the plan to launch DTH until digitalization is completed islandwide. Dialog is currently testing digital DVB-T2 transmission within Colombo from last week.

Dialog TV will convert their remaining transponders from DVB S to DVB S2 within next year to create more space for new channels. Due to heavy competition from Dish TV.

DVB-T2 is available for anyone who has a normal antenna and a TV with DVB T2 tuner. Dialog is testing it as it will be a solution for rain fade issue in future.

Sri Lanka is planning to shutdown analog signals by 2017 December 31.

Wonderful news, conversion to DVB-S2 will definitely bring new channels. At the moment, there are many test channels in Dialog TV. They need to fill these channels 1st. Dialog TV improved a lot over the years.
