KOLKATA: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) will not extend the deadline for submission of package forms, popularly known as CAF or CRF forms, beyond August 23. That leaves around 28 lakh subscribers in the Kolkata Metropolitan Area with seven days to submit their forms.

"There won't be any extension. In a meeting with the MSOs on Thursday, we found that around 30% information has been updated so far," Trai member R K Arnold.

While some operators have progressed considerably, most of the multi-service operators are apprehensive about how it will pan out beyond August 23. "Form submission is possible but both the operators and subscribers have to be proactive. Operators have loads of data with them and they can start uploading data immediately," said Suresh Sethia, director of Siti Cable.

According to a Trai consultation paper, Bengal has 8% cable TV subscribers of the country. Of the set-top boxes seeded in Kolkata and Howrah region, top five MSOs of the state enjoy a 97% share of that.

Apurba Bannerjee, director of Silverlight Den, said, "It will be difficult for us to complete rest of the work within a week as one-third of the subscribers have submitted their package forms with us," he said. According to another operator, one of the MSOs with 7.5 lakh subscriber base has been able to process 3,000 package forms so far. Sensing a trouble brewing, Cable Operators' Sangram Committee has called a meeting on Friday to apprise operators of the ground realities. "We have sent letters to Trai, detailing lack of enthusiasm among some MSOs," said Apurba Bhattacharya, secretary of the operators' organization. "It will take months the way things are progressing at present," he cautioned.
