TRAI has released recommendations on KYC of set top boxes. They said that there is NO need at all for any Location Based chip is STBs.

TRAI also denied for period physical verification of STBs as it would cause financial burden and inconvenience. They only said that a mobile number must be linked with all old and new set top boxes.

So basically nothing is changed as DTH operators already made RMN mandatory for everyone and they also verify location at time of new connection installation.

STB smuggling benefits both the DTH operators and the government. I don't think they should have a problem with that as long as UAE tries to charge arm and a leg for it's tv services. Heck, some people are even using Vodafone IROAM packs as they are cheaper and offer more data than UAE local operators.
