Satellite TV channel North Eastern Television (NETV), which covers the eight north-eastern states of India, has inaugurated a new bureau in Gangtok, capital of the Himalayan state of Sikkim.

NETV is the first private direct-to-home (DTH) channel to broadcast from the north-east region of India since 2003, state bureau head Chewan Krishna Dahal told iSikkim.

"Sikkim has been a major constituent of the news contents of the channel and its six other channels since we set up base here in 2009," he is quoted as saying.

"A studio will come up to broadcast live events, panel discussions and news bulletins especially in Nepali, because NETV is the only Indian TV channel to have a dedicated Nepali news bulletin on DTH network for the Nepalis in India."

"We have plans to employ young, talented, trained youth in various journalistic and technical positions which are also in the pipeline," Dahal added.

NETV already has bureaux in the other state capitals of the north-eastern states of India, as well as in New Delhi.

The private channel is available on major cable and DTH TV platforms across the north east, throughout India, and also in Fiji, Mauritius and the Maldives.
