Dish TV has announced that its HD box will provide recording functionality at no additional cost. There are a lot of disadvantages linked to their feature enabled Set Top Box:
- While they claim recording is unlimited. There is a cost of external hard disk which will totally be borne by the customer so consider unlimited recording = unlimited cost
- You cannot record two channels simultaneously and playback old recording. Imagine waiting for a whole show to get recorded while you will have to sacrifice on other shows
- You will need a new remote with DVR functionality which involves an additional cost
- More importantly Data stored on your pen drive or hard disk drive will not be read on any other STB or computer
- Flash Drive or Hard Disk always needs to be connected which is very unfeasible if you have your personal disk/drives.
- There will be no series recording function which makes it a tedious task and requires tremendous co-ordination.
So while they may easily say DVR at no extra cost we as consumer need to be aware and informed about offerings.

But can we record a program on 1 channel while watching any other channel??????

Atleast it is better than HD STB.
Suppose you are going out for some urgent work..... you can use your dvr stb to record
You can't ask for more if its a free offer.....

Recorded data of all DTH operators including Dish tru hd+, Tata Sky HD+ are encoded, because of piracy issues, hence it cant be decrypted either in pc or in any other stb...
Check with an internal hdd of Tata Sky HD+, they even have more complex and secured encrypting algorithms than dish tv....

Regarding the case of the bearing the cost of external hdd, you can also use a pen drive of 2GB, 4GB or 8GB which are readily available now a days at an affordable cost. Also it depends on a person whether he wants to invest in a high priced external hdd or a pen drive and on the amount of data a subscriber wants to record.

Thanks greatkarthik sir... actually all the subscribers have different demands, so depending on it dish tru hd+ has given the freedom to choose a recording media, either a 1GB pendrive at the least to huge data storage capabilities of external hdd's..
I am currently using a 1TB (1000 GB) external HDD for my dish tru hd+ pvr because my needs are for huge volume recordings...

Sure many disadvantages Of Dish TruHd+ But if Cost side it is to good From other Stbs,Before this i Think Solid Stb @ rs.2500 In market and use for fta Channel Recording i, now We can Record Any pay channels....As per my knowledge No any Disadvantage At this Cost, if we want to view a channel And Recording Another Sure TruHd+ Price increase Nearby 7000 Coz Twin tuner And Lnb Needed For this and Presently hard disc Charges Very Higher

Nice review...

Indeed, there are many limitations, but considering the almost zero cost, its boon for dishtv users :)
