Brazil’s Globo and Japan’s public broadcaster NHK have announced they will be showcasing live 8K broadcasts during Rio 2016 Olympics
Major sports events have proven to be the perfect testing arena for TV technologies. While 4K was the hot topic during the last Olympics as well as the Brazilian FIFA World Cup, 8K will partially take over for Rio 2016.
With Ultra HD 4K still far from having penetrated TV consumption, the 8K screenings will point to the mid-term future.
The broadcasts, which will be available to the public, will showcase at Rio de Janeiro’s Museu do Amanhã (Museum of Tomorrow) and will include broadcasts of the opening and closing ceremonies as well as several games.
“We are still consolidating the migration of TV viewers to HD digital TV in Brazil, but the technological evolution does not wait, and the Globo team has been studying the next generation of technologies for free-to-air TV,” said Raymundo Barros, CTO, Globo. “Such action reinforces the importance of free-to-air TV and its evolution to a more immersive experience with UHD.”
It’s not the first time Globo has experimented with 8K, as it already used it during the 2013 Brazilian Carnival, and the 2014 FIFA World Cup. But this will be the first live terrestrial transmission in 8K available in Brazil.
