The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, in association with Mukti Rehabilitation Centre, had organized a seminar on Solvent Addiction on 23rd June 2011, falling in the same week as International Day against Drug Abuse, from 4 pm onwards in the Chamber premises. Educating the stakeholders about the debilitating effects of drugs which range from financial, to functional, to emotional was the main aim of the seminar. Dr. Jai Ranjan Ram (Consultant Psychiatrist, Apollo Hospital), Dr. (Prof) Nilanjana Sanyal (Psychoanalyst and professor of Psychology in Rajabazar Science College) and Ms. Rita Chatterjee (Principal of Apeejay School) were some of the key speakers at the event. The renowned actress, Rupa Ganguly, was the special guest for the event.

Opening with a welcome address by The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the seminar was inaugurated by Smt Rinchen Tempo, Principal Secretary of Women and Child Development and Social Welfare, Government of West Bengal. The theme address was conducted by Mukti Rehabilitation Centre where an expert panel discussion on Solvent Addiction was also held. Furthermore the success stories of recovered patients, who were subject to substance abuse, were also shared with the people present.

All types of people suffer from addiction; rich and poor, male and female, working and unemployed, wildly successful and hopelessly down on their luck. The only thing that they have in common is that they all need help. With people from all walks of life and ages falling prey to drugs, drug addiction continues to be a major concern for today’s society and this concern is rapidly growing with every passing day. To address this pressing issue, the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry, an institution focused on sustainable development and disseminating information and educating business, industry and the society about the need for balancing industrial growth with social stability, arranged the seminar on Solvent Addiction. This was done in association with Mukti Rehabilitation Centre, a non profit organization, dedicated to eliminating drug abuse and addiction from the society, providing treatment and rehabilitation to people in the grip of addiction along with healthcare and support to people living in difficult circumstances regardless of age, race, s#x or religion.

Mr. P. Roy, the Director General of The Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry said, “It won’t be an exaggeration to call drug addiction one of the most significant social problems of the decade and the present situation is acute calling for immediate attention. We realized that taking the matter lightly or ignoring the problem won’t help. So we organized this seminar as a small step towards educating the society about the rippling effects of drugs.”
