KOLKATA: The cable TV segment in West Bengal has witnessed a total investment of Rs 1,500 crore for conversion to the digitized mode.

"There has been an investment of Rs 1500 crores for digitisation of West Bengal. However, there is a need to encourage indigenous manufacturing of set top boxes, digital headends and other equipment. Fiscal policies should be tailored to achieve this objective and offer incentives for import substitution," said Mr Kishan Kumar Binani, Secretary, CTMA (Cable TV Equipments Traders & Manufacturers Association).

"CTMA calls for a need to treat the cable TV sector as an infrastructure engine to drive economic growth and not just as an entertainment tool. The Association also calls for local government's pro-active role in formulating a policy to avoid visual pollution of the jungle of overhead cables. Value-added services, broadband, voice over internet protocol, gaming, HD/3D services, to further empower customers on the same cable and thus bring about another opportunity for the economic growth riding on the digital system can be launched," said Binani.

On Wednesday the Cable TV Show 2014, one of the largest shows on satellite and cable television in India, was flagged off Madan Mitra, minister-in-charge for sports and transport, West Bengal.

Nearly 10,000 cable operators, traders, manufacturers, channel partners, distributors, broadcasters and Multi-System Operators (MSOs) from across India, Bangladesh, Bhutan and Nepal are attending the show. This year the focus is on implementation of digital transmission of cable TV signals and its environment management.

Well done West Bengal, though you delayed a bit you seem to have made a good progress unlike Tamilnadu that seem to have plans to stay the only analogue cable service in the entire nation.
