Salman pips SRK for the richest celebrity title

Bollywood superstar Salman Khan has grabbed the richest celebrity title after earning more than rival Shah Rukh Khan in 2016.

The 50-year-old actor has outdone SRK with an income of Rs 270.33 crore (Rs 2.7 billion) for the period beginning 1 October 2015 through 30 September 2016. He has emerged as the top earning celebrity of 2016 in the Forbes India Celebrity 100 List.

Salman’s total earnings constituted 9.84% of the total wealth—Rs 2,745 crore—of all top 100 celebrities for the year, according to Forbes’ estimates. He rode on the commercial success of the Sooraj Barjatya-directed ‘Prem Ratan Dhan Payo’ in late 2015 and then ‘Sultan’ in 2016.

SRK, who had a mixed year in terms of box-office success and brands endorsed, posted an estimated earning of Rs 221.75 crore, thus losing his perch at the top.

Forbes bases its ranking on estimates of entertainment-related earnings as well as fame between 1 October 2015 and 30 September 2016.

When it comes to the fame ranking, India’s Test cricket captain Virat Kohli was the most popular celebrity.

Add to that his Rs 134.44 crore estimated earnings, Kohli jumped to the No. 3 spot overall, from No. 7 last year.

Akshay Kumar (estimated earnings: Rs 203.03 crore; fame rank 11) also moved up to No. 4 on the list, led by the commercial success of his movies like ‘Airlift’, ‘Rustom’ and ‘Housefull 3’, besides a growing list of brand endorsements.

Though Mahendra Singh Dhoni (estimated earnings: Rs 122.48 crore; fame rank 4) retired from Test Cricket in December 2014, his fame quotient shot up this year because of a biopic on him, fetching him the fifth position overall in this year’s list.

Forbes India CEO Joy Chakraborthy said, “We are pleased to present to our readers yet another collector’s edition of Forbes India. The Celebrity 100 list is the definitive index of who’s making what in the business of fame. To determine the Celebrity 100, Forbes India evaluates talent across the entire entertainment world including idols from Bollywood to sports thereby creating a truly holistic list.”

“Movies and sport are very big business these days, and the celebrities on our list are acutely aware of that. This year’s list is also ample evidence of the enormous influence of Bollywood and cricket in India,” added Forbes India editor Sourav Majumdar.

The highest gainers this year were singer Arijit Singh (up 50 spots to No. 15 in the list), superstar Rajinikanth (up 39 places to No. 30) and author Chetan Bhagat (up 26 spots to No. 40).

This year there were eight returnees to the list, prominent among which were Sanjay Leela Bhansali (No. 75) and the musical trio of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy, who are back (at No. 83), thanks to more live shows and Bollywood compositions.

There are also 14 newcomers, including a range of personalities such as celebrity chef Sanjeev Kapoor (at No. 73), who has become a formidable brand in the food world.

Twenty-one-year-old badminton player PV Sindhu debuts on the list at No. 62, thanks to her earnings and fame after her silver medal at the Rio Olympics. Rapper Badshah also makes an impressive entry (at No. 81), propelled by many popular hits in the period under review.
