Guys

I was wondering what screen aspect ratio do HD music channels such as Sony ROX HD and MTV Beats HD use?

When MTunes HD was available, it used to show songs with black bars but the aspect ratio was 16:9. It didn't look like stretched 4:3 ratio. Same goes with 9xM channel.

But new HD channels Sony ROX HD and MTV Beats HD show songs without black bars and still the ratio looks like 16:9.

So what's the difference between both screen ratio? One with black bar and the other without black bars.

HDTV screen is 16:9 (ex. 16 inch wide and 9 inch tall) but hd videos uses 2.35:1 in 16x9. that's why you see black bars (example star gold hd and sony max hd). Sony rox is stretching the video vertically and horizontally (zooming the video to remove black bars). Mtunes hd shows full hd video without zooming (like original HD YouTube music videos).
Note: HD TV serial and sports are shown in 16:9 aspect ratio without black bars and without any zooming

In India only Hindi and regional HD movie channels continue to use black bars, whereas all other HD channels (including Hindi music channels) are full screen. Why? :huh (Not specifically with respect to music channels)

If you pay attention music channels like sony rox and english movie channels are zoomed in to remove black bars. you can compare by playing hd original song in youtube and watch the same song in hd channels. The movies are shot with 16:9 camera but they are edited to 2.35:1 for more wider view (theater release) So, these channels zoom in to remove black bars but some channels like sony max hd did not zoom in to remove black bars. Sports and tv series are shot in 16:9 edit in 16:9 and displays in 16:9

I see. So they are zooming the videos to remove black bars. Never noticed it. Thanks for the information. :k
