After a gap of four years, Hindi GEC Sony Entertainment Television (SET) is bringing back the original format of its popular singing reality show ‘Indian Idol’. The seventh season of the reality show is set to air by Q4 of FY17, at 8 pm, every weekend.

Regarding the upcoming weekend programming line-up, SET EVP and business head Danish Khan said, “Every quarter there will be a big-ticket show. Right now, there is ‘Super Dancer’, which will be followed by ‘Indian Idol’, ‘Entertainment Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega’ or ‘Kaun Banega Crorepati’ and then ‘Dus Ka Dum’.”

Besides Anu Malik, the channel is bringing back the initial judge Sonu Nigam for the seventh season of ‘Indian Idol’. Nigam judged the first and second seasons along with Malik. Khan said that it would be great to bring Nigam back as he brings experience, passion, liability and credibility with him.

The channel has already done some city auditions for the show and has received good response.

For the past few months, the channel has gone through several changes in the programing line-up, sorting out new concepts. The initial strategy of the channel was to build the weekend and then focus on weekday programming. With ‘Super Dancer’, ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, ‘CID’ and ‘Crime Patrol’, the weekends are finally sorted.

“’Super Dancer’ is a slot leader. ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’, ‘CID’ and ‘Crime Patrol’ are also doing well. Our current focus is on the weekday line-up,” Khan added.

Sony’s market share has grown to around 12%, up from the earlier 7.5%. ‘The Kapil Sharma Show’ and ‘Super Dance’ have led to revenue growth for the channel this year.

Khan stated, “Compared to last year, there is a definite percentage growth in revenue. The viewership growth in these nine months has been around 38–40%. With viewership, revenue has also grown. Hence, there’s been massive growth and hopefully it will continue. Shows like ‘Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi’, ‘Sankatmochan Mahabali Hanuman’ and ‘Crime Patrol’ are doing very well throughout the week.”

SET is planning to create weekday FPC from 9 pm to 10.30 pm to cater to urban audience. It is also looking forward to opening the 7 pm and 7.30 pm slots by January.

The channel has recently launched a romantic thriller titled ‘Beyhad’ at 9 pm and is planning to launch three more shows in the coming months. The response to their weekday shows ‘Crime Patrol’ and ‘Kuch Rang Pyar Ke Aise Bhi’ has been positive so far and the channel hopes for the same with ‘Beyhad’.
