Sun Direct has become the first DTH operator in India to offer IPL (Indian Premier League) matches in high definition (HD). Previously, Sony Max HD, the channel on which IPL is being telecast, was being offered by cable operator Hathway.

However, subscribers will need to have HD enabled set top boxes to enjoy the broadcast.

"All existing HD customers of Sun Direct as well as new customers will receive MAX HD at no additional cost," Sun Direct said.

Sun Direct's HD pack comprises of about five HD channels from the Sun group and two English channels and costs about Rs 90 per month for the HD channels alone.

Sony Max HD will be the third non-Sun group HD channel on the platform.

Other operators, such as Airtel Digital, provide up to a dozen HD channels.

Sun Direct said the matches will be telecast on HD without any ads over the next 54 days "for a near stadium experience."
