MUMBAI: Sun TV Network has moved Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) to recover outstanding dues to the tune of Rs 30 crore from direct to home (DTH) operator Reliance Digital TV.

The broadcaster had moved TDSAT on 31 October seeking an urgent hearing in the matter on account of Reliance Communication’s decision to shut down Reliance Digital TV with effect from 18 November due to the expiry of licence.

A lawyer involved in the matter confirmed that the outstanding is Rs 30 crore.

The matter was first heard on 1 November followed by 3 November. It was subsequently adjourned to 7 November.

Prior to the hearing on 7 November, Reliance Communications said on 6 November that it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Delhi-based Veecon Media and Television to sell the DTH business under Reliance Big TV.

Veecon will acquire the entire shareholding of RBTV with business on ‘as-is-where-is’ basis, along with all existing trade liabilities and contingent liabilities. Incidentally, RBTV owes a lot of dues to broadcasters in addition to other trade partners.

As part of the deal, Veecon will renew the existing DTH license of RBTV by submitting the required Bank Guarantees with the ministry of information and broadcasting (MIB).

RCom said that the transaction ensures that all existing 1.2 million customers of RBTV shall continue to enjoy uninterrupted services. It also ensures the continuity of employment for approximately 500 employees of RBTV.

The tribunal has directed Reliance Digital TV to file a short reply in respect of interim relief claimed by Sun TV within 10 days. Rejoinder, if any, may be filed within three days thereafter, as prayed for.

The matter has been posted under the same head on 21 November.

Tough times ahead for Reliance Communications Ltd. Hope they work out their deals with MTS and Veecom successfully to lower their debt.
