Swami Vivekananda’s life is now a teleserial

While the world is celebrating the sesquicentennial birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda, his life has been now shot as a television serial. The serial, titled Swami Vivekananda, is an effort of Krishnaswamy Associates, which is celebrating its golden jubilee this year. The excerpts from the serial were shown at a preview here at Raj Bhavan on Saturday.

Krishnaswamy Associates, a media organisation started by Dr S Krishnaswamy in the year 1964, has produced several documentaries and TV serials in the past five decades including acclaimed works like Indus Valley to Indira Gandhi and Visaalam among others. The organisation’s current work is on the life and message of Swami Vivekananda. The serial, which will have 52 episodes of 25 minutes each, is to be telecast at 9 pm every Saturday, for one year commencing July 13, 2013 on Podhigai channel, the Tamil regional network of Doordarshan.

Speaking at the preview show, Dr S Krishnaswamy, the script-writer for the serial, said, “We conceived the idea of making the life of Swami Vivekananda into a serial nine years before. While we began to concentrate and translate the life and message of Vivekananda into a screenplay, we maintained authenticity and were able to ensure that it would be audience-friendly.”

He added, “We have now completed 30 episodes. The next schedule of shooting is to commence in August for the rest of the 22 episodes of which some have been planned to be shot abroad”. During the preview, excerpts from first 22 episodes were shown.

After the preview, Governor Dr K Rosaiah, “The serial is timely as the world is celebrating the 150th birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. He brought fame and honour to humanity as a whole. Vivekananda is one of the teachers who enlightened the youth. His life is a message to the youth. Imbibing his thoughts and messages we must build India greater than what it is. Let us live up to his ideas and take the country to new heights”.
