MUMBAI: Kangna Ranaut-R Madhavan starrer ‘Tanu Weds Manu Returns’ has become the first movie of 2015 to cross the Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion) mark at the domestic box office.

Produced by Eros International Media and directed by Aanand L Rai, the movie reached this milestone in 11 days of theatrical run. It posted a net box office collection of Rs 103.47 crore (Rs 1.03 billion) on Monday.

Helped by the absence of any big movie release, ‘TWMR’ continued its dream run at the box office in its second weekend.

Released on 22 May, the film netted Rs 38.10 crore (Rs 381 million) in its first weekend. It mopped up Rs 70.02 crore (Rs 700 million) in the first week and added another Rs 28.35 crore (Rs 283.5 million) in its second weekend. On 1 June, the film collected Rs 5.10 crore (Rs 51 million) to cross the Rs 100 crore mark.

Eros had released the film across 2200 screens in India and 350 screens overseas.
The movie was made on a budget of Rs 30 crore (including Print & Advertising cost), Eros said.

Despite releasing during the weekend of the Indian Premier League (IPL) semis and finals, the film garnered the year’s highest weekend collections.

Rai commented, “Nothing can be bigger and more encouraging than this for a filmmaker. I’d like to thank everyone for accepting the film with so much warmth.”

Eros International Media Sr VP, India Theatrical Nandu Ahuja added, “From the time the trailer went out, audiences were hooked and there was tremendous anticipation around ‘TWMR’. The film opened to a thunderous response at the box office with screens packed to capacity.”

Overseas, the movie has grossed Rs 36 crore (Rs 360 million).
Eros International Plc president – marketing and distribution Pranab Kapadia added, “TWMR has struck just the right chord with international audiences and set new benchmarks in the overseas markets as well. The film has shown unprecedented response and outperformed across all territories, creating box office history in regions like UAE. Like in India, the film is the biggest opener this year in the overseas markets too.”
