‘The Jungle Book’ opens big

‘The Jungle Book’ has raked in close to Rs 40 crore (Rs 400 million) from the Indian box office in its opening weekend, according to industry estimates. Directed by Jon Favreau, the Disney film is the second-highest box office earner among Hollywood movies in India, after ‘Fast and Furious 7’. The live-action movie was released on Friday in India, a week prior to its US release, across nearly 1,600 screens in English, Hindi, Tamil and Telugu

‘The Jungle Book’ stars 12-year-old Neel Sethi (Mowgli). The tiger Shere Khan is voiced by Idris Elba, the panther Bagheera by Ben Kingsley, the bear Baloo by Bill Murray, and the python Kaa by Scarlett Johansson. ‘Fast and Furious’ seventh edition earned around Rs 50 crore (Rs 500 million) in its first weekend (Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday) across 2,000 plus screens. However, if only the first three days are compared, ‘The Jungle Book’ has inched closer to ‘Fast and Furious 7’. “The Jungle Book has been well received by the Indian audience across languages. The Hindi version has also fared well with Bollywood stars lending their voice, which has helped capture a wider audience,” said film analyst Komal Nahata. Bollywood actors Priyanka Chopra lent her voice for Kaa in the Hindi version, while Irrfan Khan did the voice-over for Baloo, Shefali Shah for Raksha (wolf), Om Puri for Bagheera and Nana Patekar for Shere Khan. Based on Rudyard Kiplings’ legendary story, Disney first released ‘The Jungle Book’, an animated film, way back in 1967. “We embrace the mythic qualities of Kipling in the more intense tonal aspects of the film, but we left room for what we remember from the ’67 film, and sought to maintain those charming Disneyesque aspects,” said director Jon Favreau.
