Turner launches Toonami in India

MUMBAI: Turner International has expanded its fleet of kids’ entertainment channels in India with the launch of 24-hour English action and anime destination Toonami.

The channel will complement Turner’s existing brands Cartoon Network and Pogo. Pogo has been positioned as a general entertainment channel for kids. Cartoon Network, on the other hand, is a comedy destination for kids.

Cartoon Network was earlier heavily into the action/adventure genre. However, it vacated that space in favour of comedy, which has been gaining traction. In effect, Toonami’s launch will fill the gap vacated by Cartoon Network.

Toonami is designed for viewers seeking a full tilt, rollercoaster ride of adventure, quips, drama, and a whole lot more. It features franchises such as ‘Batman’, ‘Superman’, ‘Transformers: Robots in Disguise’, and ‘Justice League’.

Turner International India MD South Asia Siddharth Jain said, “It is a real proud moment for Turner to bring in a channel like Toonami to our young Indian audiences—we now offer a robust entertainment experience for all ages and interests. A highly successful international brand, it will meet the growing demand for premium quality action-adventure and superhero content.”

With the launch of Toonami, the action adventure space in India will become as competitive as the kids TV space. Other players in the segment include Disney India’s Disney XD and Viacom18’s Sonic.

The action adventure channels are generally skewed towards boys in the age group of 8–14 years.

In India, the channel is being distributed by Taj Television and is currently available on Siti Cable, InCable, Home Cable, and JPR Cable Network across Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Bangalore.

Toonami is already present in the Asia Pacific region across 14 countries including Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Sri Lanka.
