The ongoing digitisation of cable television network will change the business ecosystem for Indian broadcasters and act as a catalyst for international players to enter the country, says Christopher Slaughter, chief executive officer of Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia.

Cable and Satellite Broadcasting Association of Asia (CASBAA) is an industry body with 130-member organisations working on promoting digital multi-channel television and video content across Asia. Slaughter was here for CASBAA's annual India forum.

In his words, India's broadcast sector is in a state of explosion in terms of growth, thanks to the digitisation process by the government. Digitisation means all cable TV households would receive digital signals through a set top box.

"Digitisation process is the biggest shift in terms of the operating practices of India. This kind of change in the cable industry is unprecedented and it is just the beginning of the change," Slaughter says. "It is a bumpy ride but I am very confident that all the players in this market are embracing the change and working towards it."

He says digitisation will enable greater transparency, launch of new products and services and greater participation of international players in this market.

If the foreign players get's in the MSO business we shall both get the excellent quality, cheap packages and atleast double the number of channels.

But this will be good only for those who watch english, sports and movies channels alone, people who want regional channels may stick with Indian MSO's.

The foreign player already in India is the Star Network's "SKY" already available in the name of TATASKY, so since they are already in DTH business if the nation permits they can easily challenge the other MSO's with their mighty technology, finance and influence.

Who knows, India may soon have IP TV replacing cable tv, in IPTV all recordings are already available on the centralized system and one may watch any program not later than 12 hours.
