MUMBAI: Upcoming Hindi general entertainment channel &TV has unveiled its historical show ‘Razia Sultan’ that will chronicle the life of the first and only woman emperor of the Delhi Sultanate.

The historical will launch on 2 March, airing in the early primetime slot of 7:30 pm from Monday to Friday. ‘Razia Sultan’ will be the opening show of the channel at the time of launch.

Aiming to create a buzz on the launch day, the channel roped in Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan to lend his voice to the opening montage of the show.

The story goes that Khan, who is hosting a reality show ‘India Poochega: Sabse Shaana Kaun’ for the channel, saw the rushes of ‘Razia Sultan’ and loved it so much that he wanted to be a part of it and this idea struck the team.

Giving a peek into the royal kingdom, Razia Sultan opened the royal gates and welcomed all to witness the 13th-century slave dynasty.

Produced by Swastik Productions, the show will present the making of Razia Sultan, narrating her journey from a young girl to a strong warrior.

Swastik Productions producer Siddharth Kumar Tewary said, “After we finished making ‘Mahabharat’, my wife and I were discussing what to do next and this idea struck us as the story of Razia Sultan is not known to many.

Women in that dynasty were called Sultana, but Razia called herself Sultan as she was as strong and capable as any warrior. It is a very inspiring story.” Although being a historical biopic, the story can be seen as a finite one as Swastik and &TV have inked an annual deal for the show.

The biopic of the first and only woman emperor of Delhi Sultanate from 1136 to 1140 is being directed by directors Hasnain Hyderabadwala and Mukesh in cinemascope format to encapsulate the grandeur.

The durbar saw Emperor Iltutmish (Sooraj Thapar), Shamshad Begum (Seema Kapoor), Qutub Begum (Khalida Turi), Princess Razia (Pankhuri Awasthy) and Ruknuddin (Ankit Arora), along with Sambhavana Seth who makes her debut on the small screen as a courtesan.

The set features Turkish-Iranian architecture designed by Omung Kumar. It is spread across 3.5 acres and over 200 members are working round the clock
