MUMBAI: Viacom18, the joint venture company between media conglomerate Viacom and Network18 Group, has firmed up plans to launch two niche channels and a Hindi movie channel.

The niche channels will be rolled out either by this year-end or next year. A senior executive of the company, however, did not reveal details on the niche channels which "may be in multiple languages ".
The company will also invest in HD channels and the Hindi movie channel will come up this year. Viacom18 already houses Hindi general entertainment channel Colors, MTV, Nick, Vh1 and Viacom18 Motion Pictures.
The company has slipped into the red due to a rise in expense on movies and production. Net loss for the fiscal first-quarter is under Rs 10 million, compared with a net profit of Rs 200 million a year ago, as operating expense grew 22 per cent.
Revenue jumped 16 per cent to Rs 2.76 billion, up from Rs 2.38 billion a year ago.
Total expenses stood at Rs 2.58 billion, up from Rs 2.12 billion, with production consuming Rs 1.65 billion as the quarter captured the cost of the big-ticket reality show Fear Factor - khataron Ke Khiladi. The third quarter spend on content will also remain high as Bigg Boss will launch, coinciding with the festive season.
Viacom18 spent Rs 730 million on marketing, distribution and promotional expenses in the third quarter ended June 2011, while staff cost stood at Rs 210 million.
