Zee Classic offers rare insight

Zee Classic is India’s only Hindi movie channel with the largest library of classic films with over 300 exclusive titles from the 1940’s to the 1970’s.

As India’s one-stop destination to experience the magic of the golden era of Indian cinema, it has been Zee Classic’s constant endeavour to not only showcase movies of this period, but to also acquaint viewers with the stalwarts who shone brightly, made a noteworthy contribution and catapulted this industry to where it stands today.

As the first step of its larger endeavour of taking evergreen classics beyond television sets and giving today’s generation a holistic experience of the most significant period in the evolution of Indian Cinema, Zee Classic presents The Classic Cut — a festival in Mumbai that pays tribute to the greatest films and icons of Indian Cinema.

The Classic Cut is a festival that will screen classics such as Do Bigha Zameen and Awara. The festival will also include a workshop on Dadasaheb Phalke, the pioneer of Indian Cinema and the Phalke Factory project conducted by film, television and radio director and screenwriter Kamal Swaroop.

There will also be an archival exhibit of rare film posters of classics such as Mother India, Awara, Sholay, Do Bigha Zameen among other great films. While the archival exhibit of film posters will be inaugurated by the National award-winning film-maker Ketan Mehta, Do Bigha Zameen will be presented by its maker Bimal Roy’s son, Joy Roy. Zee Classic has partnered with Enlighten Society, a body dedicated to facilitating cultural events including film screenings, discussions, talks and lectures and most importantly providing a catalyst for bringing people with shared passions together.

Mohan Gopinath, Sr vice-president, business head, Hindi Movie Cluster, ZEE, says, “Bringing classic cinema and the masterminds that sculpted it closer to the current generation is a proposition that has always been close to our heart.”

He adds, “We are happy to partner with Enlighten Society who share our passion for celebrating India’s cultural and cinematic roots. At The Classic Cut, we will begin by showcasing films like Awara and Do Bigha Zameen, two path-breaking films that paved the way for many to follow."

"Kamal Swaroop’s workshop on Dadasaheb Phalke’s pioneering genius and canvas of work will take film enthusiasts to the roots of cinema as a craft. Ketan Mehta’s presence at the inauguration and Joy Roy presenting his father Bimal Roy’s Do Bigha Zameen will add an interesting dimension to the proceedings. We promise a rich experience for every cinema lover with The Classic Cut. The festival is an initiative on the part of Zee Classic aimed at film connoisseurs that the channel caters to. The festival is a first of many more initiatives to come,” he said.
